It is a simple yet very thoughtful and powerful mantra – ‘Just be yourself.’
This prompts us to stay and practice genuineness, away from the pressures of performance or compliance. Do we need to fix it and take care of everything in life? – NO! And what a relief that is! It’s a liberating feeling to realise that not everything needs our immediate attention. A few things need to be witnessed and perceived for the better.
‘Let things be’ – Teaches the art of acceptance, allowing life to unfold its enchanting colours without over-controlling or giving up at any stage.
We run a relentless race chasing grandeur and mundane opulence, not realising that life has a different dimension, which is just SIMPLICITY. This dimension is about finding joy in the little things, appreciating the present moment, and living authentically. We start preaching and unfolding truth and happiness in the people and the commodities around us. We often forget to explore and honour the truth within us, which is free from expectations, roles, and masks. When we decide to shun mental wrestling, the constant struggle with our thoughts and emotions, we allow life to unfold at its own pace.
To trust oneself is the most significant gift one can give to oneself. It is a belief that sails one through the Rocky Mountains without giving up at any stage. There is trust that who you are is enough, and what’s meant for you will find its way – sooner or later, IT WILL. This trust empowers you, giving you the confidence to face life’s challenges, bringing a sense of confidence and security into your life.
We must remember that everyone around us is trying hard to make us somebody else; the most complex challenge is to maintain an attitude of faith in oneself. Oscar Wilde said, “Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.” This should inspire us to remain true to ourselves, regardless of what others may say or do.
During the ragging period in my first year of medical school, I was silenced by the frustrated and irritated seniors. They tried crushing my mental acumen by gaslighting and forcing me to believe that I wouldn’t be able to make it to the top. I worked hard and refrained from victimisation. I refused to accept the seniors’ attitude and struggled to define myself, and I topped the university exams.
Every individual is bestowed with a quiet strength – ‘Letting things be.’
We celebrate and exert control over others through suggestions, interpretations, and force. To subdue their ambitions and yet choose to ‘let things be’ may seem like indifference or submission. But honestly, it’s an attitude that recognises the natural flow of life and wisdom without forcing a change. For instance, when a friend is going through a tough time, instead of bombarding them with advice, sometimes it’s best to be there for them, allowing them to process their emotions at their own pace.
Why should we try to fix or reshape people and situations, beholden to a compulsive urge to do so? It is a trust that understands that not everything in life requires intervention. The best response, however, is patience – a pause, rather than a push. Following this principle, we stop exhausting ourselves both mentally and emotionally and focus on our reactions, peace, and inner clarity.
This attitude inculcates and teaches humility in the individual. It offers relief from anxiety, expectations, and the urge to control other people.
“Not everything revolves around your will”. Better to create space and let people grow, healing their wounds with emotional clarity—
*Not everything is meant to be changed.
*Not every conflict needs a resolution.
*Not every silence needs to be filled.
*Not every moment needs to be improved.
Decide not to do anything – breathe and observe.
Letting go of things is not a weakness. It is rather a form of wisdom that paves the way to living gracefully even when the world spins beyond one’s grasp. Letting go means releasing the need to control every aspect of our lives, accepting that we cannot change certain situations or people, and allowing ourselves to move forward without being weighed down by past grievances or regrets.
This attitude works wonders in pursuing and maintaining relationships.
Why is there a need to fix people? Why can’t we let them walk their path, even if it differs from ours? Why escape our emotions? Life means letting go of imperfections and embracing the messy, imperfect, and the ugly.
Letting things go is a choice and a revolution within itself. It is the most powerful resolution one can have.
‘Just be yourself’ – The original is worth more than just a copy, and you are what you believe yourself to be. Comparison and competition with others can lead to disrespect and frustration. Having faith in oneself and not looking outside and duplicating a successful personality is the essence of authentic living. Instead, let the world experience and appreciate your imperfections, flaws, and uniqueness, and let them sense your distinct, magical, and magnetic charms.
“I am my own experiment and work of art” – this attribute must make one dance above the world’s surface, lifting one’s undoubted creativity unhampered by others’ opinions.
Just be and love yourself, because these issues relate to our capacity for resilience and the power to understand the potential we hold within. We need to conquer ourselves, not the mountains.
Practicing the mantra of ‘Just be’ and ‘Let it be’ is the true essence of life. This self-education and enlightenment bring fortune. Always strive to do your best until you know better, and when you know better, do better.
GEORGE BERNARD SHAW – “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
