Why does first love stay with us long after it ends? Long after we have changed, grown and loved again – Why does that first connection still echo?

First love often leaves a deep impression because it affects our brains, shapes our identities, and marks our emotional memory. This all happens during the initial experience. The enduring effect doesn’t necessarily mean it was the best or most compatible, but simply that it was the most formative. Understanding this can help one feel seen and appreciated for the emotional journey they are on.

First love continues to influence us later in life by shaping our emotional growth and honing our communication skills. It is unforgettable, not because it was perfect, but because it was FIRST.

“I can’t forget my first love because it isn’t a person in my memory, it’s a chapter of me.” At that time, we didn’t understand how to love thoughtfully; we only knew how to love wholeheartedly.

I was just seven when SHE entered the classroom, carrying a fresh breeze and an aura of charisma. HER confident body language and perfect persona captivated everyone, but I was especially struck, feeling an innocent infatuation at first sight. This connection lasted through the years as WE grew into teenagers and navigated puberty. OUR adolescent conflicts, ego clashes, competitiveness, and small gestures of appreciation and affection only strengthened OUR bond. However, OUR story took a turn after school when WE chose different paths and careers, eventually drifting apart into obscurity.

Even after many years, the memories of the ‘first love’ remain with me, and the lingering sense of the distant past helps me realise and affirm my empathy and compassion towards innocent affection and meaningful relationships. First love, they say, leaves a scar that never really hurts, but never really fades.

This is a familiar story we all experienced during our growing years. Some people continue to cherish the past, keeping its memory alive in their minds and hearts, whereas others let it go as a fleeting phase and move forward. Over time, our brains often preserve the emotional moments while fading the more ordinary or painful details.

Why does the First Love stick so deeply?

* Relates to identity development – During the early years, individuals struggle to define their identity and understand its meaning, self-assessment, boundaries, and adaptability. The first love or attachment becomes a fundamental part of their self-awareness, shaping how they see themselves through the lens of love.

* The intensity of brain chemistry— happy juices such as dopamine, oxytocin, and adrenaline, which are linked to reward, bonding, and excitement, overwhelm the naive adolescent and early youthful minds, fuelling emotional romance. During this period, the brain feels highly powerful and fulfilled, with a strong sense of uniqueness.

* Comprehension of all initial experiences: emotionally and mentally – The brain memorises these first experiences more vividly because they establish emotional templates for future relationships, guiding understanding of connection and vulnerability.

The innocent sensations of a racing heart, sweaty palms, loss of appetite, sleepless nights, a deep longing for closeness, and an ongoing sense of loss fill the curious minds. When the heat first ignites, whether it endures or not, it leaves an enduring impression.

* Strong idealisation and realisation – You may recall not only the person you loved but also the genuine self you encountered. There is a clear feeling of being chosen and valued among the entire crowd. You are no longer just yourself; instead, you become someone’s favourite person, which tenderly nurtures your self-worth.

It’s like a mirror reflecting a more emotionally flexible and lively version of yourself, who remains caring, loyal, and patient.

* The first love is the best teacher — showing you how to cope with heartbreak or success. Both lessons are vital because they reveal ‘who you are’ and ‘what you can become,’ respectively. It teaches you how to love and cope with pain. It shapes our expectations, encourages genuine affection, and prepares us to confront conflict and the pain of abandonment. It provides a foundation for understanding individuals and relationships in later life, advising caution in handling them and encouraging more pragmatic respect for boundaries.

The greatest myth is the belief that one must forget their first love to move on in life. In reality, for most people, healing involves integrating the experience rather than erasing it.

Some people tend to dwell on the past, longing to relive their first love and becoming stuck there. Others simply cherish the sweet memories and choose to move on.

What helps the mind transition from reliving past memories to merely remembering the bygone romantic days —

* The best approach is to cherish and recognise what your first love has provided and fostered in you.

* Set aside your ego and honestly accept what you didn’t receive.

* Make it part of your past, not your future.

Neuroscience indicates that initial romantic experiences and connections are stored more profoundly than subsequent ones. First love isn’t just about the heart; it actually rewires the brain.

GEORGE BERNARD SHAW said, “First love is a little foolish and a lot of curiosity.”
